A Day in the Evacuation Center

Typhoon Sendong has greatly devastated Iligan City and has taken the lives of some of its dwellers. Many houses got washed out, so some of the victims chose to temporarily stay on evacuation centers that were put up. The evacuees come from different walks of life; rich, poor, or what have you, they ended up staying there.
              As I get to converse with them, I have heard different stories. Despite the fact that my family and I were affected by the misfortune, I could not prevent my eyes from forming tears for the reason that I have been touched by their stories. I personally have mine too, but I guess mine’s too insignificant compared to theirs.

      I decided to be a volunteer because I want to be part of a noble cause; I was the assistant of the secretary. The victims confined in the IIT Evac Center were in very poor condition; the food that they receive three times daily often lacks. Families that have:
1-3 members can take two food packs;
4-6 members, 4 food packs; and
7 above, 6 food packs.

Despite the misfortune that they have faced, they still can afford to smile when other volunteers and the organizers begin to call for different activities requiring their attention and participation. Aside from the food that they receive, they also are given various items that come from special institutions, political personalities, and other organizations.

Red Cross Chairman, Dick Gordon, Congresswoman Lani Mercado and her husband Senator Ramon Revilla have visited the many evacuation centers in Iligan City and checked the condition of the victims and aided them with food so they will have something to feed themselves as they gradually stand up from the calamity. Dick Gordon said:
                “Okay lang ang tumanggap; pero di dapat tayo masanay. Dapat bumangon tayo. Kailangang magtiyaga tayo. Kung walang tiyaga, walang nilaga.”

Here are some pictures that will give you an idea of what the victims’ condition is.
